Frictional realism
Meaning is born in continuation; truth is born in friction.i
- det. 19 May · interpretedSharper: a language model is a machine for continuation; knowledge is a continuation that has survived the relevant frictions.
- det. 19 May · interpretedWorking formulation: meaning is born in continuation; truth is born in friction.
- det. 19 May · interpretedStarting point: an argument that language models show language does not describe reality. Read more cautiously: coherence can be produced before, beside, or against any check by the world.
Position
Language generates possible forms; the world, tools, bodies, documents, calculations, institutions and other agents push back. Knowledge appears when forms survive these loops of friction.i
What it refuses to claim
- Naive mirror realism: language as a copy of the world.
- Total textualism: the world as an effect of language.
- Naive technophilia: models “understand” in the full human sense.
- Sterile critique: models “only” repeat, and produce no operative structure.
Working concepts
- Self-generativity
- the power of signs to produce further signs, stories, categories and possible worlds.
- Friction
- what resists a statement: a test, an action, a source, a calculation, an institution, a body.
- Graded grounding
- from text alone (G0) to a world of action and responsibility (G5), with documents, tools, simulation and perception in between.
- Discursive attractor
- a frame of language that captures decisions and imaginations.
- Operative fiction
- a model that is literally false and locally useful.
Experiments
- proposed
Closed Babel. Does an invented sign system stabilise without any referent?
- proposed
Minimal world. A small world whose truth is known; where do models go wrong?
- proposed
Truth by friction. An agent must state what would change its claim, then meet a test.
- proposed
Retrieval against parametric memory. Is a citation a friction, or only a rhetorical ornament?
- proposed
Octopus and Quine. Two agents, the same textual traces, incompatible ontologies: can both stay coherent?
- proposed
Peirce and ReAct. Sign, hypothesis, action, observation, revision: does acting reduce errors, or only their visibility?
- proposed
Controlled loss of reality. Remove sources one by one and watch what coherence survives.
What it could lead to
- an idea A frictional truth laboratory: grounded notebooks, verification agents, maps of discourse.i
- already feeding This site’s own form: every claim states how it is known, and corrections stay visible. · arsis.devi
- already feeding Spicilège: why each item was kept, proposed by a model and then checked against Julien’s own answers. · Spicilègei
